Pike County Soil & Water Conservation District uses an inflatable soil tunnel as a highly portable, interactive, walk-through educational exhibit. It provides children and adults with a vivid, ground-level perspective of what happens beneath the surface to teach about soil layers, root systems, underground habitats, and natural resource conservation. The inflatable soil tunnel achieves its educational goals through the following features: Visualizing Soil Layers & Health: Inside, visitors can see representations of different soil horizons, root depths, and the four main components of healthy soil: minerals, organic matter, air, and water. Demonstrating the Ecosystem: The exhibit highlights the biological composition of soil, showing where organisms like earthworms, nematodes, and beneficial bacteria live. Teaching Conservation: It illustrates how different land uses (such as agriculture versus urban development) impact soil health, drainage, and water purification.
